The Beast Within Us All

The established private space market has unlocked a door of industrialization that is just beginning to crack itself open. On the other side lies infinite potential and a universe of resources. Now that human population numbers have reached dangerous levels for both ourselves and our planet, it seems natural progress to take the next step outwards and colonize the skies. Our sense of self preservation can go undamaged and the Earth can unload some threatening baggage. Not only that, we will also have increased chances of encountering alien life. Wars lose all validity with so many new resources and territories, and our race can continue to reproduce at will without fear of crowding or poverty. The situation says "Win" all around, and we have since been hurtling headlong toward intergalactic manifest destiny.

But just how manifest is our destiny? A history of entitlement issues has plagued humanity since our darkest days. The accumulated grief of displaced peoples over the years weaves echoes of injustice deep into the present. In the core of our brains sits a bundle of nerves that we share with all other animals on this planet. The R-complex is a violent vestigial relic from our barbaric reptilian days. It is the foundation of every human mind, and it needs little excuse to flare up in fits of territoriality or jealousy. Some of our most taboo and heinous deeds are reasoned away in this gray area of Grey matter. It's the kind of thing no one likes to talk about, but it's something we must keep in mind before spreading our neurotic tendencies into the pure void of space.

Our reputation is at stake. Some have accused mankind of behaving like a global parasite. Indeed, how like a parasite are we to outgrow/destroy our host before deciding to move on? Our rational Neocortex is quite capable of suppressing baser reptile instincts on an individual basis. But, when huddled into groups like teams or nations, our R-Complex overcomes inevitable neocortical differences and takes control of our collective decision making minds. Politics, governments, concentrations of power and wars are the result. Unfortunately, the hard-wiring of evolution cannot undo the past, only build on top of it. There's no silencing the roars of dinosaurs long gone. From millions of years the past, they call for blood over the most trifling of modern issues.

Are we acting responsibly when we bring our ugly tendencies into the heavens? Whose to say more resources and space will stop our age-old desire to fight? Will we ever commit Xenocide on inane charges? Is enlightenment guaranteed out in the galaxy? Or will we remain our malicious selves? How do we appear from the outside looking in? Do we understand Peace enough to know it's what we really want? Have we the right to extend our path of destruction into the cosmos? How much space debris have we accumulated in a scant 50 years? Do we deserve further expansion? Have we actually tamed the dormant beast within? These questions will need fulfillment if we truly wish to become benign sovereigns of the sky.
