Participatory Exploration (PE) is a goal of NASA for future space exploration and virtual exploration using archived data gathered by planetary probes. Most of the GLXP teams are also preparing methodologies to support participatory exploration by citizen scientists, hobbyists and space enthusiasts. Synergy Moon has been making inroads into online virtual realities as a portal and platform to support PE. One of the largest and most sophisticated virtual worlds is Second Life (SL).


We have been working in SL for about a year now, trying out programs and testing applications. SL already has one space portal, the International Spaceflight Museum at Spaceport Alpha: [ http://slurl.com/secondlife/Spaceport%20Alpha/48/78/24/ ], used by space advocates to promote space exploration. We are focused on taking this virtual world to the next level, a virtual reality control interface for lunar exploration.
