Huntsville Center for Technology Students Interview Apollo Astronaut Fred Haise

Some students at the Huntsville Center for Technology who are working on the Google Lunar X PRIZE project with the Rocket City Space Pioneers had a cool, unique opportunity today. They got to interview Fred Haise, Apollo 13 astronaut, for a future segment on Huntsville City Schools’ Educational Television (ETV). Sarah Folse, Quiana Hunt, and Michael Hartman, along with Tom Kennemer of ETV, asked the astronaut questions on camera. The HCT students had their own questions, and there were inquiries that had been emailed from other students.

The Davidson Center for Space Exploration at the US Space & Rocket Center (USSRC) was the perfect backdrop for the interview. Mr. Haise is in Huntsville this week for several events. Last night, he was at the USSRC for a special dinner, and “Lunch with an Astronaut” was held today. This evening, the USSRC will present Mr. Haise as part of its “Passing the Torch” lecture series with “Overcoming Challenges” followed by excerpts from the Apollo 13 movie with the astronaut’s commentary.

It’s really neat to live in the “Rocket City” that has such a rich space heritage and to have so many opportunities to be inspired by the space pioneers who’ve blazed the trail before us. The students who interviewed Mr. Haise each have high career goals: one wants to attend the Air Force Academy, one is interested in astronomy, and one in aerospace. I was thrilled that they were able to talk to a real astronaut.

It was an honor for me to meet Mr. Haise, as well. Since I’ve been working as Public Outreach Liaison for the Rocket City Space Pioneers, I’ve had the opportunity to meet some really cool people and learn a lot more about space. I have a greater appreciation for the exploration that has been done and all that needs to be done.

I’m really impressed with what the students at the Huntsville Center for Technology are doing. The ones who interviewed Mr. Haise were thrilled to have him sign their lunar project they are working on for a competition!
