FF #9 - Full-Time Scientists, German fans and Cheesburger

Welcome to the ninth Fan Friday.

Here comes the ninth Fan Friday. You ask and we reply. If you want to take a look at the previous questions go to our blog.

This week we chose five questions with a mixture on social and tech.

Social "Do you also have Full-Time Scientists?"

We're still true to our name and consists largely of part timers. I say largely because recently a number of students joined the team who can work for PTS full time as the subject of their study field.

Social "Is there a German fanpage?"

Due to strong demands we're indeed now offering a community for German speakers. Currently it's a german Facebook Fanpage but the new webpage we are currently working on will be bilingual.

Tech “How is the rover steered/operated?”

Mission Control

The rover is completely remote controlled and only has very rudimentary intelligence. At the ground station there are operators taking care of the overall mission and rover operations. Imagine a large room with many people in front of a lot of screens showing 3D imagery, simulations and models with a coffee dispenser in the back.

Tech "Does the rover has cheeseburger? uhm I mean lamps/floodlights?"

Mission operations are at daytime thus there will alway be sufficient lighting available to have a look around. In fact we even have to make sure our optics are well protected to not get permantly blinded by the sunlight. At night we don't need any lamps because the equipment shuts down when the solar panels can't create any energy.

Tech "How does a sunset on the moon look like?"

We have no idea.

That's it for FanFriday this week. If you have a question for us and want them answered from a genuine Part-Time Scientists send us your questions to q@part-time-scientists.com
