First Thruster Tests

Team FREDNET members in Australia have been very busy building the first prototype of the Ground Hovering Test Vehicle. This video shows the first closed loop tests of one of the three thrusters mounted on the prototype, using compressed air, a single axis gyro, and a PID controller. Apparently, the PID controller software will need some tuning, but it's nice to see it moving :-)

You can follow the progress of the Team FREDNET Ground Hovering Test Vehicle in our public forum.

Free-Fly zone in Australia?

Someone told me that there is a large free-fly zone in Australia. No permit, licenses, etc needed to fly stuff therein. Anyone know if that's true? If not, ugga-bugga.

LOL

Don't you guys know you need an FAA permit for that? Even if your "launch" is powered by water weenies, you need an FAA permit! They're really cracking down. Disneyland recently had to shut down its Dumbo and the Flying Elephants ride because they failed to get the necessary experimental flight permits! This might disqualify you from the contest.

But, you know, if the thing doesn't fly, my grandma still might be in the market for one to power her rocker! See, you guys might be in the wrong business. Instead of powering rockets, you should be powering rockers! Now I know grandma is going to want it to be controlable, because it looks like you still need a little work seeing how at the very end it looked like the rocker started to tip over!

But watch out Oddessy Moon, because if FREDNet gets a three-way for their compressor, they just mignt be lifting off higher than yours! Can you imagine that? And the FAA will want an environmental study to be done!

Re: LOL

The ground hovering test vehicle is being built in Australia so no FAA. Moreover, the experiment was carried out inside a building.

Oi!

I was just joking in good fun, acsete! I think the new FAA tethering rule that materialized out of thin air is not only in violation of lawful federal rulemaking practices, it is also ridiculous. Good to hear the Aussies are not keep progress on hold down under.
