Once the Astrobotic lander reaches the surface and the rover departs, the lander’s primary mission is to provide power, communications and thermal control for its payloads. The lander deck serves as a radiator to keep payloads and avionics cool, even as the moon’s surface exceeds 120 degrees Celsius at lunar noon. White paint on the top surfaces helps the lander stay cool, while insulation on the bottom surfaces protects it from the boiling-hot ground.
