One-Section Ramp for Rover Egress

Rover egress from the lunar lander will be accomplished by a set of deployable ramps. The video below shows the process of egress, including a one-section ramp concept that is actuated by preloaded springs. During flight, the rover and ramps are secured by Frangibolts, which are non-pyrotechnic release mechanisms. The ramps deploy upon landing, providing a 21 degree slope to the lunar surface. The advantage of the one-section concept is its mechanical simplicity, eschewing the need for four-bar mechanisms and other hinges and hardware. Two sets of ramps located on opposing ends of the lander provide an alternate egress direction if a hazard is present on one side.

Additional work is being performed to design the ramp surface, to reduce the mass of the structure, and to determine a necessary mounting structure for the ramps.
