Here is how it [Roy's device] works: Electrodes lining the vehicle’s surface ionize the surrounding air. This creates plasma on the vehicle’s exterior. An electrical current sent through this plasma generates a force that not only produces the necessary lift and momentum.

I may be wrong but isn't there a shortage of air to ionize on the moon or is that another secret NASA does not want us to know

I'm just thinking about multiplicity. Take astrobotic for example, they are the contest leader by a long shot in terms of publicity updates. But if we had 20 astrobotics, that would be a minimum of 20*8 = 160 videos to look at each month. I would rather watch 16-32 videos per month max of higher quality than get inundated by 160 videos, some of which the teams felt they needed to produce by rote to fulfill the requirements.

I realize the X PRIZE is an educational foundation and that a good stream of material is essential to this goal. But I would really and truly caution you about the need to reduce the requirement to 2-4 videos max per month in the interests of quality and viewability.

As far as education goes, one problem with having so many videos from each team is that good videos that are really educational may be drowned out by the volume of miscellany being produced. I'm not trying to discourage videos, because I particularly enjoy watching them myself. But right now only a few teams are regularly producing videos. As things heat up we could get swamped with videos, and then it would be hard to be selective.

P.S. I thought about it again like this. I'm not going to do a poll because there are not enough participants. But suppose we did a poll that asks, "How many team videos would you like to watch each month?"

Do you really think someone is going to check the box that says 160? Because 20 teams times 8 videos a month each is 160 videos a month! I think you might find some people who check off "20" (1 video each) or "40" (2 each), but not 160 (8 each)!

Quality, not quantity. Plus, this way, instead of getting burnt out looking at a slew of videos from one team, people will be encouraged to look at videos from more teams.

Topic Replies: 3

Is it really too excessive require 8 videos a month? The requirements clearly state:

15 minutes cumulative per month
8 discrete videos
4 videos of at least 30 seconds

The reasoning here is simple: produce a substantial number of videos of varied length. You could make 15 one-minute videos, but wouldn't it be easier to make 4 one-minute videos and 4 2.5-minute videos? You'd be surprised how easy it is to make a 2 minute video (or how difficult it is to make a video less than 2 minutes). At the same time, we don't want teams to create one 15 minute video per month.

We aren't asking for documentary quality videos here; we're looking for good content. Shoot it, upload it, watch it. Simple as that.

You'll see that some teams are already fulfilling this requirement, and it reflects very positively on them.[/list]

That's a great revision, Will! It's good to see some flexibility on the Mooncasts. You've narrowed it down so much there is little left to suggest. Here are my remaining suggestions (#2 is very important for me):

1. I recall a prohibition somewhere about getting sponsorship from tobacco companies. Is that going to be in the rules?

2. What about teams that don't want certain logos or ads associated with their team or craft? E.g., companies that sell psychotropic drugs (caffeine, nicotine, Prozac, Paxil, Ritalin, Zyprexa, Vicodin, etc.). I think there should be a conscience clause. I don't want "Coke" to be on my rocket or in my Mooncast.

3. With so many teams, I think having each team produce 8 YouTube videos a month is excessive. I think 2-4 per month max would be better. Otherwise, assuming all teams complied, it would just be too much. I think we need to focus on quality instead of quantity.

Chandrayaan's Moon Impact Probe struck the lunar surface a week ago - probably on the north-facing slope of Malapert Mountain, though no exact location has been announced. ISRO have released two images taken during the descent. I have now located them. Here they are, superimposed on the Clementine basemap.

Some GLXP teams may use descent images or video to locate their landing sites. Will we see images like these in a couple of years from a winning team? NB - it's not as easy as it might seem to make these matches, especially if resolution and lighting are very different.

Wow! ARCA received the same support from AGI that all the GLXP teams have received! What a "fascinating" end to the year! ARCA has really come through as promised!

"The progresses that we have made until now are substantial and we anticipate a fascinating end of year."--ARCA, Sept. 20, 2008.

This is the team I'm rooting for???

I thought we were supposed to see Stabilo fly.

You've got to admit, though, that ARCA's picture of the ELE engine test is pretty fancy, with the logo in the upper right hand corner and the lettering.

By now they've probably been getting laid in Romania (I think all but the leader is single) and so they figure there's no hurry. No need to milk the cow too fast, eh, ARCA?
